Today, TGC Health is celebrating a very important day. Known globally as International Women’s Day (IWD), it’s not only a day of reflection on the achievements women have made so far, but also today is an important reminder that society must strive to ensure gender equality in all aspects of life. According to the United Nations (UN), we are still not where we need to be globally. In fact, the UN states that we are going backward instead of making progress in achieving the UN Sustainable Development goal to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by 2030.
As women co-founders of TGC Health and recently entering the world of entrepreneurship, we have been privileged to receive support from our families, community, and peers. Saying this, in 2019, the likelihood of females being self-employed was roughly two and a half times lower than males in OECD nations. So why is this? Research has revealed that females are unquestionably less self-assured than men, potentially impacting women’s confidence in starting an entrepreneurial journey.
How can society work together to advance and ensure gender equality? Firstly, building confidence in young girls and women by celebrating their achievements and ensuring inclusion is critical. We continue to ask the question: “If not and why not?” if women are not included in the equation, and ensure that women and girls have access to quality education and training.
We hope that our journey as entrepreneurs inspires other women. We believe in the courage, enthusiasm, and dedication that women have and also the value that we bring to society. Yet, we must continue to be self-assured that we can succeed by supporting each other throughout our life’s journeys. Let’s start today by celebrating and investing in each other!
